Coffee and dogs have two things in common: loyalty and consistency. And for Ray, the founder of Spotted Dog Coffee, this beverage and a Dalmatian named Matrix go together like, well… coffee and dogs.

Growing up, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee snuck under his bedroom door and enticed his nostrils every day. It woke him up like a trusted alarm clock—even before the rooster's first crow. His dad got up bright and early each morning to brew a fresh pot, and this was way before the advent of Keurig or even Mr. Coffee.

Standing over the hot stove, Ray's dad boiled water and added a few heaping scoops of fresh grounds. The resulting brew was always the same—strong, robust coffee that would provide enough energy for the entire day.

Ray would fill a canteen and head out to a nearby creek. Matrix always followed closely. The two would sit around an open fire and enjoy the simpler things in life. Drinking coffee and bonding was the best way to spend the morning, afternoon, or evening. The inseparable duo never missed a day.

Matrix was more than an animal. He was Ray's best friend—a lifelong companion. The two shared many adventures, from playing a few countless games of fetch to winning ribbons at local dog shows. And Ray always had his canteen of coffee to keep him going.
